Chemical peels are a series of solutions applied to the skin that remove the top layer of dead skin cells and help reveal a smoother and more youthful complexion. Peels may be administered by a professional at a spa, medical facility or at-home. There are many different types of chemical peels and they’re all formulated with different acids. Some peels are stronger than others and capable of removing thicker layers of damaged skin. There are various types of chemical peels, but the most common are the following:

  • Superficial Peel – Uses mild acids to gently exfoliate the outermost layer of the skin. Alpha-hydroxy acid is one of the most commonly used chemicals for superficial peeling.
  • Medium Peel – Targets both the outer and the middle layer of the skin, making it more effective in removing damaged skin cells. The usual chemicals used for medium peels are glycolic acid or trichloroacetic acid.
  • Deep Peel – Deeply penetrates to the middle layer of the skin to get rid of damaged skin cells. The common chemicals used for this type of peel are phenol or trichloroacetic acid.

What to expect at a Beverly Hills facial peel

The Beverly Hills chemical peel procedure is done in a comfortable room with proper ventilation and lighting. You will be placed in a lying down position with your eyes closed and protected.  To avoid chemicals from pooling in sensitive areas of the face, a neutralizing agent is placed on the nose, eyes, and mouth. For deep peeling, a local anesthetic may be given to the you to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

The process of applying the chemical to the face will depend on the peeling agent used. For liquid solutions, a cotton tip applicator, brush, or gauze swab can be used. For gel types, a plastic or wooden spatula is used. The process of chemical application starts with the thicker skin, such as the cheek, forehead, chin, and nose. It will be evenly distributed to other areas of the face in even strokes. Once the skin is fully covered with chemicals, it will be allowed to soak in and settle, before a neutralizing solution is applied to your skin.

After the procedure, you may notice some redness, swelling, and a burning or stinging sensation depending on the depth of the peel. It may appear as though your skin is irritated, especially after deep chemical peels. To soothe the face, you can apply a protective ointment. These symptoms will eventually resolve in a week or two.

The use of makeup will depend on the type of chemical peel. If you had a light peel, you can wear make-up a day or two after the procedure.

It is also important after a chemical peel to limit sun exposure, regularly cleanse your skin and apply moisturizer.

Getting Ready for a
Chemical Peel

When planning to undergo a chemical peel, the first step is to choose a highly reputable medical spa like Skin Verse Medical Spa Beverly Hills. We will start with a pre-procedure consultation to assess the condition of your skin, discuss your reasons for wanting to have a chemical peel, and set your expectations for the treatment. A significant part of the consultation process is reviewing your past medical history to make sure you are a perfect fit for the procedure. We will want to know:

  • If you have any medical conditions like diabetes mellitus, abnormal scarring, nutritional deficiency, and photosensitivity.
  • If you are taking oral contraceptives or using isotretinoin.
  • How often you are exposed to the direct sunlight
  • Your skin’s thickness, texture, and overall condition via a physical examination

For 3 days before your scheduled treatment, please make sure to:

  1. Avoid heavy UV ray exposure
  2. Apply sunscreen with at least SPF50.
  3. Avoid topical skin products like Retinol, tretinoin, glycolic and salicylic acids, and AHA
  4. Avoid waxing, exfoliating, and bleaching of the treatment area
  5. Wash your face with a non-residue soap the day before the scheduled chemical peel
  6. Avoid wearing make-up and moisturizer the day before and on the day of the procedure

How much do chemical peels cost?

Chemical peeling is a non-invasive procedure that helps to reduce the appearance of conditions such as dark spots and uneven skin tone, while also revealing a more youthful appearance. It’s important to know how long chemical peels last because it determines how many treatments you will need before seeing results.

The results of a chemical peel can last from weeks to many months, depending on the depth and concentration of the peel. Additionally, sun exposure can increase the rate at which your skin regenerates its own top layer, so working with a skin specialist is key to getting optimal results.

chemical peel is a procedure that uses a special chemical solution applied to the face to get rid of skin issues like wrinkles, damaged skin cells, discoloration caused by sunspots, and scars. There are various types of acids used for chemical peels, and each type has a varying depth of skin penetration. The procedure is called a “chemical peel” because it causes the skin to exfoliate and peel off, revealing new, smooth, and younger-looking skin.

Chemical peels are used to remove dead skin cells, unblock pores, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, improve overall texture of the skin. They are also beneficial in treating acne and hyperpigmentation problems. Chemical peels can be performed on a variety of skin types, but should not be done without your health care professional’s approval. Chemical peels are also used to treat superficial and mid-depth skin problems, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne, acne scaring and hyperpigmentation.

If you want to get rid of sun damage, acne scars, skin impurities, and fine lines, one of the procedures we often recommended is chemical peeling.

Chemical peels are generally done on the face, neck and hands. The goal of chemical peels is to remove layers of damaged and dead cells from these treatment areas in order to reveal healthier, more youthful looking skin beneath it.
